Anime Reviews: Blue Exorcist Episode 09 - Memories

Turns out the ghoul attack was just an exam, now Rin and his classmates are all wondering if they did well enough to pass.  But Yukio can't help but wonder, Neuhaus was acting a little too realistically, like he was really trying to kill Rin.

But Neuhaus reassures Yukio that it was all part of the exam, even forcing Rin to reveal his demonic powers.  He says that where Yukio is there to keep Rin under control, Neuhaus is under orders from Mephistopheles to test that power, and see how far it goes.

Yukio meets with Shiemi, and asks her if she has chosen whether she wants to be an exorcist or not.  They flashback to the first time the two of them met, and it's pretty cute.  The love triangle I think is being set up here is only in the early stages, but I think it looks promising, for those that like love triangles.  Personally I find them the bane of my existence, but this blog isn't about my opinions...oh wait...  Anyway, I'm liking what I see so far.

Yukio suddenly realizes that something was off about what Neuhaus said, though for the life of me I can't figure out what it was, and runs back to the dorm.  He moves Rin, who sleeps through it, to another room where he has Shiemi keep an eye on Rin, while Yukio goes to confront Neuhaus who tries to shiv sleeping Rin with a giant protractor.

But as far as odd anime weapons go, this one makes sense as Neuhaus uses it to draw a giant summoning circle to summon the most powerful ghoul he can.

Rin gets involved in the fight, and discovers that Neuhaus was a survivor of the blue night, but his family did not make it out alive.  Rin lets Neuhaus stab him, and asks if that's enough to satisfy him.  Clearly shaken by Rin's un-demonic behavior, and by the massive blood loss he is suffering, Neuhaus retreats.

Shiemi makes her way up to the roof, and starts healing Rin from the ghoul's temptaint he is infected with.  She tearfully tells Rin that she's decided (to become an exorcist), though Rin has no idea what she's talking about.

The episode ends with all the Esquire candidates passing the exam, and Mephistopheles taking them out to eat.

This episode confirms why I love this series so much.  It has great action, but rather than focusing solely on action it spends just the right amount of time focusing on characters and establishing their relationships.  While some of the characters and their interactions may ring familiar, as is common in shonen anime, the series does everything competently enough that any complaints are only minor complaints.  At least that's what I feel like.
